STATEMENT
"At its best
my art seeks to describe a universe of polarities. It delineates those
paradoxes in our existence of light and dark, weak and strong, the abstract
and literal, in a world full of irony. My work at other times only
needs for me to enjoy doing it and people to enjoy seeing it."
The present series
of polymer photo gravures started with the stolen flowers suite in 1999.
In that series I started working as I had in the early 1980's with
words in my visual artworks but this time using images that I was
initially "photographing" with my computer. The earlier texts were taken
from literary works in progress and the images were usually of leaves and
flowers that metaphorically became the pages for a book.
Recent works garnered
from bits of video I edit from commercials, movies, and the evening news
focus on the time between the big events in our lives. People who are caught
up in the moment "on the way to the fire" so to speak but not the fire
itself. I am memorializing the most common moments that make up our
days and by far the greater parts of our lives.
I try to define the
perimeters of these passing days by the nature of their extremes. I see
a paradox of opposites in life, that no matter how ironic, are dependent
on one another to exist at all.
